One of the things that I love about our current musical landscape, is that a variety of people are getting an opportunity to shine. I always root for the people who are really passionate about their music, and aren’t just going through the motion for the fame and acclaim. For that reason, I’m pretty excited about Mack Wilds‘ Best Urban Contemporary Album GRAMMY Nomination for his debut effort “New York: A Love Story” which was released in September. On it, he blends smooth R&B with the gritty sound that made New York Hip-Hop legendary. Last night, (December 10th) he brought that swagger to the newly revamped Arsenio Hall Show to perform his hit single, “Own It”.
You may be more familiar with Mack as the actor Tristan Wilds, who rose to fame with leading roles in The Wire, 90210, and Red Tails. He took a break from the silver screen to dive headfirst into his passion for music, and it’s paid off. While early sales on “New York: A Love Story” were slow, Wilds created a considerable buzz around the project, and won over plenty of critics who were skeptical, for various reasons. Of the nomination from the recording academy, Mack says:
All I can say is THANK YOU! I dreamed about this as a kid. Now it’s real. It means so much to me. This nomination is for my city! For my #WildThings! This is for each and everyone that made this possible.
If you’re in the New York area, you can check out Mack performing a set at the legendary SOB’s on December 23rd. Click HERE for tickets and more details.
