5 years ago, Jay James Picton didn’t know he could sing. He joined the British Royal Navy at 16, worked as a physical trainer, and then played rugby and soccer. After a rugby injury left him with a ruptured tendon in his knee, he found himself watching guitar tutorials on YouTube. He taught himself how to play, and write songs, and then discovered a voice that some are likening to Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Al Green. That’s high regard, but with his debut album ‘Play It By Heart’ scheduled to be released in the UK next week, we’ll have an opportunity to see how he lives up to the standard.
