It’s no secret that Drake has an… interesting… admiration for the late, great Aaliyah Haughton. I say interesting (meaning weird) because he’s never once met her, but has her face tattooed on his back. That’s beyond creepy, in my opinion, but that’s also beyond the point.
If the rumors floating around the internet streets are true, Drake is set to premiere a brand new single this Sunday (8/5) at his annual OVO Fest in Toronto, which will feature unreleased vocals from Aaliyah. He previously sampled her cover of The Isley Brother’s “At Your Best (You Are Love)” for his track “Unforgettable”, so this doesn’t seem too far fetched.
This, however, does sound like a bit of a reach: could Drake be executive producing a posthumous Aaliyah album? The good folks over at Hip Hop DX are reporting that it’s true:
A reliable source with inside knowledge of the situation told HipHopDX that the Young Money rapper, who has a tattoo of the songstress on his back, will sit at the helm for her new LP. Details surrounding the album are scarce, but in March, producer Jeffrey “J. Dub” Walker said that an unreleased song titled “Steady Ground” will appear on the project. Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, later said that no such album was in the works.
The truth will reveal itself in time, I guess. We’ll keep an eye on this for you, but I ask… do you think Drake would do a good job of upholding Aaliyah’s legacy? Let us know in the comment section.
